MARITIME SURVEY & COMPLIANCE
THE 5 KEY SURVEYS
EVERY MARINER SHOULD KNOW
Purpose • Scope • Timelines • Outcomes
1. ANNUAL SURVEY
WHEN
Within 3 months before or after each anniversary date of the certificate.
WHAT IT COVERS
General inspection of structure, machinery & equipment. Spot-checks logbooks and verifies critical items (LSA, fire-fighting, steering gear) haven't degraded. No extensive opening-up.
PURPOSE
To catch deterioration between major surveys before it becomes a detention item.
OUTCOME
Certificate endorsed (not re-issued).
2. INTERMEDIATE SURVEY
WHEN
From 3 months before the 2nd anniversary to 3 months after the 3rd anniversary of the certificate.
WHAT IT COVERS
More thorough than annual. Includes inspection of structure, boilers, pressure vessels, steering gear, electrical installations. Additional items for tankers, gas carriers, chemical tankers & ESP ships as applicable.
PURPOSE
A mid-life check to confirm that what the special survey established is still holding up.
OUTCOME
Confirms continued compliance.
3. RENEWAL (SPECIAL) SURVEY
WHEN
Every 5 years, at the expiry of the certificate.
WHAT IT COVERS
Full, complete inspection of the structure, machinery & equipment — as comprehensive as the initial survey. Includes extensive gauging, NDT & opening-up of critical machinery components.
PURPOSE
To issue a new certificate. Confirms the vessel is good for another 5 years.
OUTCOME
New certificate issued (reset).
REMEMBER
Surveys are not just paperwork — they are your ship's 'health check' to keep her safe, compliant & trade-ready.

DAMAGE & REPAIR
SURVEYS EXPLAINED
When things go wrong, surveys set it right.
DAMAGE SURVEY
WHEN?
After an accident, defect or deficiency affecting the safety of the ship or the effectiveness of her equipment.
WHAT THE SURVEYOR DETERMINES
Extent and nature of damage
Whether the vessel is fit to proceed
Adequacy of temporary repairs for the intended voyage
Need for further repairs or restriction of operation
PURPOSE
To decide whether the vessel is safe to continue operation and what corrective action is required.
REPAIR SURVEY
WHEN?
After repairs, steel renewals or modifications have been carried out.
WHAT IS VERIFIED
Quality of welding and workmanship
Steel renewals / insert plates
Renewed pipes and machinery components
NDT reports and test results
Material certificates & welding procedures
PURPOSE
To revalidate class and statutory certificates after corrective action. No sign-off without proper verification.
